GENO(V)A

edited by Giovanna Carnevali, Giacome Delbene and Veronique Patteeuw
Nai Publishers in cooperation with the City of Genoa and the PortoAntico
(pp. 280)

This book illustrates and analyzes the projects for the City of Genoa, presented on various occasions since 1996, the year in which the city committed itself to redefining its city plan - up to the latest competition for Ponte Parodi, won by the studio UN (Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos) whose three dimensional square gives both the city and the port a new heart. The book also provides a look at the work of some of the best designers and architects currently on the scene, such as Rem Koolhaas, Manuel de Solà-Morales, Marcel Smets and Bernardo Secchi, MVRDV, Foreign Office Architects, OMA, Arup Associates, David Chipperfield, Dominique Perrault and Bernard Tschumi.
Several critical essays also raise questions of perspective: can a city like Genoa take part in the race for increasing globalization and "city branding"? And what role can architects play in this debate?
From economics to sociology, from history to city planning and architecture, all the 'whys' and 'hows' of a city with great ambitions are considered,
