El
port de Maó
(The Port of Mahon)
Joan Alemany, Rinio Bruttomesso, Josep Miquel Vidal
Hernández
III Curs Internacional de Ports Històrics, Ámbit
2003, Catalan edition
(pp. 110)
|
This is
a collection of the lectures and papers presented at the III
International Course on Historic Ports sponsored by the Institut
Menorquì d'Estudis and the International Centre for Cities
on Water, held in Mahon, Minorca, in June 2001 under the direction
of Joan Alemany, Rinio Bruttomesso and Josep M. Vidal Hernàndez.
The historic port of Mahon was studied from the point of view
of its relationship with tourism, the cultivation of its historical
structures, and traditional economic activities as a resource
for the future; in addition several lectures of a more general
nature identified the current state of port-city relationships
and illustrated a selection of international case studies where
former arsenals and military bases in several European cities
were re-qualified.

El
Puerto de Tarragona
by Coia Escoda Murria
Port de Tarragona
Lunwerg Editores, 2002
(pp. 255)
|
The history
of the Catalan port has been indissolubly linked to that of
the city since the year 217 BC when it was founded by the Romans;
in the present day, it has become a key element of the region's
economy.
A special chapter is devoted to the numerous activities undertaken
by the Tarragona Port Authority to promote and upgrade the maritime
heritage; examples are the cultural activities of the Moll de
Costa, inaugurated in 1986, the Centre of Maritime Studies,
the Central Archives, the Museum and the Real Boat Club.

GENO(V)A
Developing and rebooting a waterfront city
edited by Giovanna Carnevali, Giacome Delbene and Veronique
Patteeuw
Nai Publishers in cooperation with the City of Genoa
and the PortoAntico
(pp. 280)
|
This book
illustrates and analyzes the projects for the City of Genoa,
presented on various occasions since 1996, the year in which
the city committed itself to redefining its city plan - up to
the latest competition for Ponte Parodi, won by the studio UN
(Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos) whose three dimensional square
gives both the city and the port a new heart. The book also
provides a look at the work of some of the best designers and
architects currently on the scene, such as Rem Koolhaas, Manuel
de Solà-Morales, Marcel Smets and Bernardo Secchi, MVRDV,
Foreign Office Architects, OMA, Arup Associates, David Chipperfield,
Dominique Perrault and Bernard Tschumi.
Several critical essays also raise questions of perspective:
can a city like Genoa take part in the race for increasing globalization
and "city branding"? And what role can architects
play in this debate?
From economics to sociology, from history to city planning and
architecture, all the 'whys' and 'hows' of a city with great
ambitions are considered,

Il
Porto di Trieste
Cronaca e storia delle costruzioni
portuali
Edited by Autorità Portuale di Trieste
Edizioni
Italo Svevo, 2002
(pp. 269)
|
The publication
is the outcome of the work of collection and cataloguing by
the General Secretary of the Trieste Port Authority, Antonella
Caroli, of the precious historical archives stored in the Torre
del Lloyd. Images, projects of the Porto Vecchio warehouses,
documents, brochures, publications and catalogues have made
it possible to reconstruct in detail the history and current
situation of the whole of the port, currently undergoing wide-ranging
modifications.
The volume is divided into two sections, one on the historical
chronology (1615 - 1994), the other on the Port of Trieste in
the new model of integrated logistics in the Upper Adriatic
system.
